About Us
Our CAMPEP accredited medical physics residency training program provides broad exposure to components of therapeutic medical physics through a variety of comprehensive clinical rotations.
Our program is housed within the Brown University Health Cancer Institute at Rhode Island Hospital, which is the primary academic affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The Department of Radiation Oncology has a three-fold mission: providing high quality and safe care to patients, educating the next generation of clinicians and medical physicists, and advancing medicine through research. The department’s physics faculty hold appointments at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine and support clinically-focused research programs.
Our residency program has a total of two residents. We have nine radiation oncologists, eleven faculty/staff medical physicists, seven radiation dosimetrists, and one department IT administrator. Our physics faculty is expected to participate in the mentorship and teaching of our resident trainees as well as research. In addition to our CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program, the medical physics faculty are full participants in the CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Graduate Program, Radiation Oncology Physician Residency Program, and the Dosimetry Training Program.
Radiation Oncology sees over 1500 consults per year and maintains a daily treatment census of approximately 110 patients. Current equipment at our main campus in Providence includes: Varian TrueBeam STx with ExacTrac, an advanced TrueBeam with on-board imaging, Varian iX accelerator with on-board imaging, Gamma Knife Perfexion, Elekta & Varian HDR Brachytherapy, ARIA Record & Verify, and a 64-slice Siemens CT simulator. A satellite facility located at our East Greenwich Ambulatory Care Center has both an advanced TrueBeam as well as a 64-slice Siemens CT simulator. Treatment planning platforms utilized include: Raystation, GammaPlan, and Oncentra. Rhode Island Hospital Diagnostic Radiology imaging modalities include state-of-the-art CT, MR, Angiography, and PET imaging.
The Brown University Health Medical Physics Residency is truly designed to help residents grow into confident, independent clinical physicists. As I’ve progressed through the residency program, I’ve gradually taken on greater responsibility in the clinic, building autonomy while receiving strong mentorship and support along the way. One thing I appreciate about this program is how residents are treated as colleagues and valued members of the team, creating a collaborative learning environment. Joining the tight-knit crew in radiation oncology at Brown University Health reflects the same sense of community you feel living in “Little Rhody,” where teamwork, approachability, and mutual support come together to deliver the best care to our patients.
